Wii Bowling really hurts!

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Wii Sports, the games package that comes bundled with the Nintendo Wii, features a variety of games for one or multiple players. One of the more realistic and competitive games is the ten pin bowling game.

Wii bowling is a faithful recreation of the popular US sport of ten-pin bowling, and allows players to bowl in their own homes, using all of the same actions and movements that they would use in a bowling alley.

Wii’s interpretation of ten-pin bowling is very realistic in the sense that your own bowling style comes across in the game. For example, if when you play the real thing you find that your bowling style means your shots lilt from left to right, you’ll see that happen in the game. Some people will be able to bowl the ball straight and true, just as in real life.

One big advantage over the real game is that those who struggle to play bowling in a bowling alley due to conditions such as arthritis can play Wii Sports without any problems. Your fingers don’t come under the same sort of stress they would when holding a real bowling ball, so you can play Wii Sports bowling without any problems.

The problem with Wii bowling, and indeed with all of the Wii Sports games, is that by hyper extending your arm to go through the actions and without any of the resistance you would feel from holding a real ball, you can put your arm under some real strain. Of course, the more competitive you are, the more likely this is to happen.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

It’s one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it’s coming to Nintendo Wii in June. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a beat ‘em up of sorts, where your favourite cartoon characters from Nintendo’s game get to perform all manner of strange acts of cartoon violence on each other.

This Wii version of the game is said to feature a huge amount of characters who have appeared in Nintendo titles, and indeed just on Nintendo consoles over the years. Even Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid features in the game.

The battles between these unlikely characters take place in locations that are synonymous with Nintendo games over the years.

As well as the mutiplayer option where you square off against another character, the game also features a side scrolling platform style game entitled ‘The Subspace Emissary’, where you can battle your way through countless enemies and meeting other characters on the way.

The Wii will allow up to four different players, regardless of their location in the World, to battle each other at the same time.

A huge success on its release in the United States, Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes to Nintendo Wii here in the UK on June 27th.

Wii is up our alley say bowlers

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

It’s often been argued whether playing on a games console can compare to the real thing, whether that be driving, football, tennis or any other physical activity. With the invention of the Nintendo Wii the physical aspect of any sporting event has come into the gameplay, meaning that gamers can genuinely claim that their consoles offer a realistic alternative.

Ten pin bowling is one of the many sports on offer from Nintendo with their Wii console, and some experienced bowling fans have recently cast their expert eyes over the game. Made for the younger generation, senior citizens in Dallas, USA, have been having a lot of fun with the game.

Prestonwood Court in Plano, Dallas, Texas is a senior citizens home where the residents have been playing bowling on the Wii, in their common room.

89-year-old Crissie Kennedy said about her bowling on the Wii:

My age doesn’t mean a thing to me, because I know I can still bowl.

The Nintendo Wii game has become a big hit with residents of the home, as Amber McCollom, PR manager for Nintendo, says:

It just proves our point that anyone at any age can be a gamer

Nintendo didn’t expect their console to appeal to the older generation, but they’re delighted they’ve landed an unexpected market.

PES 8 on Wii

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Pro Evolution Soccer has long been the greatest football game on any console system. FIFA fans will argue of course, but I’ve always viewed it that playing FIFA was the closest thing you could get to watching Match of the Day, playing Pro Evo was the closest thing you’d get to playing football.

The two games have always come out over the years on a variety of formats, but the difference in gameplay has always been minimal. It was just a simple matter of which consol you had, or which controller you preferred. For example, the old Xbox controller was always difficult to grip whereas the PS2 controller was a more natural, ergonomic design.

However, with Pro Evolution Soccer 8 on the Wii, the control system and the game are completely different to the other formats. The Wii version features a unique control system that allows users to select players who are not in control of the ball and make ‘off the ball’ runs.

The Nunchuck is used to control the player in possession of the ball, while the Wii remote is used to select and control other players. This allows you to create, and execute complicated passing manoeuvres to score the ‘perfect goal’.

From the official press release:

Shooting also benefits from more control over the players, with the Nunchuck used to shoot or head simply by shaking it. As with the real sport, however, timing is everything in front of goal, and the speed of the pass or cross, the ability of the player, the angle of trajectory and the timing of the shot or header will all have differing effects on the resultant shot.

PES 8 on Wii is a completely new way to play football.

Lego Indiana Jones coming to Wii

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

It’s one of the biggest and most successful movie franchises ever made, and considering it was written and produced by the same guy behind Star Wars (George Lucas), and with the same leading man (Harrison Ford), is it any wonder that one of the most popular games ever (Lego Star Wars) would inspire a similar game for this film series?

His name is Indiana Jones, and he’s coming to Wii in the shape of Lego to celebrate the release of the new, fourth, Indiana Jones movie: Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Crystal Skull.

Lego Indiana Jones: The original Adventures promises to have the same humour and playability as the famed Lego Star Wars series, and has been developed by the same Manchester based company ‘Traveller’s Tales’.

The game will feature exciting sequences and lines from the original Indiana Jones Trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

You can relive the best moments from the movies, but with a Lego twist, such as the pit of snakes and the famous chase with a boulder.

The game will also feature over 60 different playable characters, including Short Round and Marion.

Mario Kart released on Wii today

Friday, April 11th, 2008

One of Nintendo’s best-loved and most successful games, Mario Kart, is released today on the revolutionary console, the Nintendo Wii.

In this new version of the classic Mario Kart, as well racing as the usual Nintendo characters such as Mario, Wario and Donkey Kong, players can also race as themselves using their personalised Mii characters. You can then also see other Mii characters that have been created offering you moral support from the crowd as you race along the tracks.

The game can be played by up to four people, or twelve players can play at once using the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. You can even compete in tournaments and see when your friends are playing online by visiting the Mario Kart channel.

One of the great features with this version of Mario Kart is that you can buy an add-on steering wheel that allows you snap in the Wii Remote and control the game with a wireless steering wheel in mid air.

This will feel natural to anyone who has ever driven before, or played racing games in the arcade.

Music sharing via MP3 is a big problem in the UK

Monday, April 7th, 2008

The industry group ‘British Music Rights’ has conducted a study into the level of file sharing that takes place in the UK due to young people copying and swapping their music on their MP3 players. It appears that music sharing in this manner is rife, with the Internet making it even easier to download and swap music via MP3 that hasn’t been paid for.

It’s not just MP3 players that are the source of the illegal music sharing however, as copied CDs make up an even greater amount of swapped music that hasn’t been paid for.

With home computers allowing for the swapping of MP3s and CD copying, it’s even easier to share music that when cassette decks first made music sharing possible 30 years ago.

The chief executive of British Music Rights, former undertones lead singer Feargal Sharkey, says the trend of music sharing could seriously damage of music.

“For somebody who has spent 30 years in the music industry, you instinctively know this stuff is going on. But when you actually sit looking at your computer and see a number that says 95% of people are copying music at home, you suddenly go, ‘Bloody hell’.”

Rather than blaming young music fans for sharing their music, Feargal Sharkey wants the music business to adapt to the way the fans are listening to their music in order for it to survive.

He means to support the MP3 player, rather than blame it for music piracy.

Wii Fit released later this month

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Did you know that January sees the highest ever number of sign ups at gymnasiums and fitness centres? Yet very few of the people who sign up actually stay more than a month!

That’s because with the New Year, and following the Christmas indulgences, people on the whole decide it’s time to get fit. However the act of actually going to the gym and ‘exercising’ in front of other, often fitter, people isn’t something many of us are comfortable with.

Fear not, for going to the gym, buying the latest Wag’s fitness video and folding up that fitness equipment to store under your bed are now things of the past, thanks to the guys at Nintendo.

Later this month sees the launch of the thing that will change home fitness forever, the Wii Fit.

For years games companies have failed to get women interested in gaming. Females have always represented an untapped market as video games has remained a predominantly male dominated arena. With the Wii Fit, that’s all about change, as Nintendo release something that every woman will be interested in.

The Wii Fit is basically a balance board, similar in size to a weighing scales, that responds to your movements to control your actions within the game.

With the Wii Fit you’ll be able to perform exercises, monitor your BMI (body mass index) and improve your balance. It also includes over 40 types if training activities, all designed to provide you with aerobic exercises, muscle conditioning, yoga training and balance.

Star Wars the Force Unleashed on Wii

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

The dreams of Star Wars fans the world over will come to life this Summer (or Autumn if you believe the revised release date) when Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is released on the Nintendo Wii.

Unlike the other versions of the game, the Nintendo Wii promises to allow players to control a Lightsaber in the game using the Wii remote, meaning you will finally be able to stand in your living room and wave your Jedi weapon around the room… for real.

Rumours are that the game will also have an additional Lightsaber addon so you can genuinely brandish something that looks, and feels, like the real thing while you hack through hordes of Stormtoopers in the game.

The Wii version, in development by Krome Studios, will also add an exclusive duel mode in which players can compete head-to-head with their friends to determine the ultimate Jedi Master.

“The Wii is a great platform for The Force Unleashed, because the console’s motion-oriented controllers really bring the game to life,” said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts. “We’ve worked hard to make the Wii version of the game unique in order to truly let you unleash the Force.”
