Do iPods affect pacemakers? Not at all, claims a new study!

Friday, March 14th, 2008

There are divergent views on whether iPods affect pacemakers or not. Some say they do interfere with the functioning, some say they don’t. A recent study by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US claims that iPods do not affect the functioning of cardiac pacemakers when the two are in close proximity of each other.

An earlier study by Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute’s study had claimed iPods can interfere with the electromagnetic equipment, which monitors heart, resulting in the malfunctioning of the cardiac implantable pacemakers. FDA research countered the claim in its new study conducted in light of widespread media reportage on serious concerns about the likely ill-effects of iPods

FDA selected different models of iPods i.e. video iPod, an iPod shuffle, a fourth generation iPod and an iPod Nano. The magnetic fields produced by these iPods during the functioning were measured. The researchers then measured the voltages delivered inside the pacemaker as a result of magnetic fields surrounding the pacemaker. The procedure to measure magnetic fields was elaborate and exceptionally accurate. Three coil sensors were used, with placement up to distance of 5 to 10 mm from iPods. For the perfect results, the peak magnetic field strength was taken as 0.2 millionth of a Telsa, which is hundreds of times lower than the levels that can interfere with the pacemaker.

On the basis of the results of this experiment, the FDA study conclusively proved the iPods did not cause any interference in the functioning of pacemakers!
