Nine Inch Nails download tracked via Google Earth
Since the Nine Inch Nails posted their latest album up for download in MP3 format 2 months ago, over 1.4 million fans have downloaded it. While most record bosses would baulk at such potential lost revenues, Nine Inch Nails are delighted with the success of their free album, and have even been using Google Earth to track where the fans who have been downloading it are based.
To further highlight their interest in the MP3 download arena, they’ve posted the Google Earth file on their website that shows you exactly where the hotspots for downloading their album are.
Areas of the globe where their album was particularly popular include Eastern America and Europe.
Trent, of the Nine Inch Nails, has apparently said he’d like to crash at the homes of the four people from Suva, Fiji, who have downloaded the album!
Trent explains where his idea for using Google Earth came from:
The idea for this visualization originally came from some data sent to us by Topspin. These guys helped us out with our digital delivery for a while and are in my opinion the best option out there for artists to deliver their goods to their audience on their own terms. Keep an eye on them - they are leagues ahead of everyone else in terms of infrastructure and philosophy
