What happens in Vegas, plays on your iPod
Next week, on September 9th, the Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz movie ‘What Happens in Vegas’ is released on DVD in the UK. What’s different about this DVD release? Well, for one thing the DVD comes with a ‘Bonus Digital Copy’ that enables you to upload the movie to your iPod, or iPhone, and watch the film while you’re on the move.
This represents a new trend in DVD releases as typically movie studios would do all that they can to prevent people from copying the movies as an attempt to fend off piracy. Now it seems that movie studios are leaning more towards digital copies of films so that film fans can use them on their computers, iPods and any portable media players.
If this trend continues we may see digital copies being released instead of DVDs, either as hard copies in the shops or as iPod downloads. With Blu-Ray taking off the way that it has, the writing is on the wall for DVD as a format, so perhaps by accompanying DVD releases with digital copies the DVD format may have a few more years of life yet.
